Your Taste is the Trend says top designer


When it comes to effective kitchen renovations, the top trend is your own personal taste, says award winnine designer Earl Lawson of VSB Design Group of Vancouver. And, Lawson adds in another iconoclastic comment, if you are planning to renovate prior to the sale of a Vancouver house, it may be better to do nothing at all.

The V6B Design Group is the only Western Canadian firm to capture not one but three awards in the 2007 Art of the Industry National Kitchen and Bath Association Design Competition, and Lawson has worked on major renovations from Vancouver to Whistler.

Lawson said homeowners should not be swpt up with the most recent fads or fashions, but concentrate on what works for their home, and what they are comfortable with. He notes that “Italian contemporary” – the latest trend in sleek linies, stainless steel and polished granite – is not always a good fit for a home renovation. Instead, he said, a home owner should choose appliances, amterials and a style that they like and can live with.

Lawson’s award winning projects often include a blend of materials and styles that reflect the homeowner’s personal taste. He has been known, for example, to successfully merge state of the industry steel appliances with distressed wood cabinets. In the main image shown on REW magazine, for instance, Lawson created a 1930s style yet truly modern kitche in a Heritage style Vancouver house. The kitchen includes excellent storage, convenience, and casual seating for a family of four.

In the inset, V6B caught the lifestyle of a Vancouver owner with bright colours, clean lines and custom artwork and contemporary open style for a modern house. “the leading trend is what the client is happy with,” Lawson said. When asked about renovating a Vancouver kitchen in an attempt to add value prior to sale, Lawson was blunt. Unless you are planning to spend big on top-quality design and m aterials, it is best to do nothing at all, he said.

“At the price of the typical Vancouver house,” he noted, “a patchwork renovation won’t help in the sale. The new home owners will likely have to rip it all out.” After all, as V6B has proven, a home renovation is only successful if the owner is happy, to live within it.
