The Fall Okanagan Wine Festival Has Grape Expectations


The Okanagan wineries have always been Canada’s favourite, but it has not been until now that Okanagan wine has received international praise and awards. This article written by trusted author Tracey R for the BC Homes and Resorts magazine examines what is coming up in the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival 2008. There will be so many vineyards and varietals to sample, BCWI offers some simple tips to make your Fall Okanagan Wine Festival experience much less stressful for everyone. Designated Driver: DO NOT taste and drive at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival. Each winery will offer you several samples over the course of a tour, and it is easy to consume far to omuch wine to be able to drive. Plan ahead at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival and choose a designated driver before you begin your tour. Strategize: Don’t feel you have to try every Okanagan wine made by every winery. Giver your tour some focus and decide to taste reds only – or whites only. Or be even more specific and taste Merlots only. That way you’re comparing apples to apples and can explore how an Okanagan wine changes from vineyard to vineyard, winemaker to winemaker. Spit: It’s okay to spit at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival. In fact, you’ll be better able to tatse more wines that way. Wineries will provide a bucket (usually located on the tasting counter) for just that purpose. It’s the one place outside of the baseball diamond where it’s perfectly acceptable. Dump: It’s not necessary or polite to finish your entire sample of Okanagan wine. When you’ve tasted enough Okanagan wine samples, it’s perfectly ok to pour it out into the spit bucket. It’s not a sign you didn’t enjoy what you were poured. It’s a sign you’re ready to move on to the next wine sample. Cleanse: Eat crackers or plain white bread between tastings at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival. They’ll clear your palate and allow you to taste your next Okanagan wine with more clarity. Too many samples without a cracker and your palate will be overwhelmed. Eat: Take advantage of one or more restaurants to break up your Fall Okanagan Wine Festival tour and more importantly, to enjoy a spectacular meal. If you’re more of a do-it-yourself type, bring along a picnic lunch. Some Okanagan wineries have picnic areas = buy a bottle of wine and enjoy the view, or find a spot along the way to throw down a blanket and enjoy a meal with a view fo the vineyards. Buy: Many of the Okanagan wines you’ll taste at a winery wont’ be available everywhere else, so if you like one, but it right then and there. Most Okanagan wineries will happily loan you an empty case to put in trunk of your car to store your wine purchases. BC has more recreational options for less many than the eastern slopes of the Rockies on the Alberta side,” said Eric, noting the motivations for the majority of Calgary buyers at this new BC resort. “Given the natural assets it has, it is inevitable. Weather is obviously a big factor – it can be substantially warmer. To have golf, skiing, the lake and everything else that goes with it, this is very difficult to replace. It really is a recreational real estate paradise.”

Coming from Alberta, Mara is the first warm lake,” Sam said, noting reasons for the large number of Alberta real estate resort buyers at this Shuswap resort, and the 90 plus percent of Albertans who have purchased at Legacy Ridge in Radium Hot Springs. “the economy in Alberta, and especially Calgary, is so strong with oil and gas driving it. So Alberta continues to drive our BC resort real estate market.”

Across the provincial border, what had been a steady migration for years is now an ever growing exodus to cities throughout the BC interior – particularly the Columbia Valley, the Okanagan and the Shuswap. “Most of the resort BC property that are selling, over 50 per cent of buyers are from Alberta,” said Curt Woodhall, Principal of Lift Real Estate and marketer for Carmel Beach Lodges in Shuswap. “Obviously their economy is strong. The climate in the Okanagan real estate is much better than Alberta and the amenities are unmatched for recreation and retirement. I don’t think that it is any surprise that Albertans are jumping on these first because they already are familiar with the area.” “Lakefront is a good real estate BC investment property because they are not making any more lakes, as far as I know,” he quipped before adding a more serious note. “It is only going up in value, supply is limited because there are only som many lakes and so many good real estate BC properties and spots available. Soon they will be all built.”

We have one of the best lakes around, the biggest provincial park in the interior of BC real estate resorts. Everything is here that anybody would want to enjoy.” “the lakes in Alberta are very nice but they just don’t have the interesting components of the vastness of Shuswap or Mara Lake,” agreed George Crookshank. “We see a lot of waterfront or lakeside real estate developments in BC that are being bought up by Albertans” said Brenda, director of communications for Okanagan Mainline Real Estate Board and a realtor with Coldwell Banker. “They really appreciate our lakes.” “It’s definitely increased. The Calgary and Edmonton (housing) markets have both really had excellend years recently. A lot of people are coming out here with this new found equity and putting it into another BC resort property. These items are summarized below: Aqua Condo resort condominium Tower Height - our proposal includes pre-construction Kelowna condo tower heights between 2 and 19 storeys allowing for a 2-storey pedestrian scaled edge. Taller residential Kelowna pre-construction condo resort towers at Aqua buildings will open up sightlines and lake views from Lakeshore, Cook and Truswell roads. Increased Aqua condominium building height eliminates the need for a heavy and dense wall of buildings which would block out 6 floors of light and views. There are current examples of this in the area. Road Improvements - the City of Kelowna has in its plans, road improvements on Lakeshore that include a new bridge over Mission Creek and widening to 4 lanes for the Aqua Resort condo property in Kelowna real estate market. The Aqua condo resort development is not the driver of these improvements, in fact, the City has had these upgrades in their plans for several years. Other Updates at the new Kelowna Resort at Aqua by Mission Group: Aqua Boat LaunchEndorsed by City. At the request of Kelowna City, we have been working on a redesign of the parking lot at Cook Road and Lakeshore, as well as the boat launch adjacent to Aqua Resort condo buildings and the Eldorado Hotel. Any of you who have tried to launch a boat there in the busy summer months will know that it can be a difficult task, as traffic movements are not always obvious.
