The Fall Okanagan Wine Festival Has Grape Expectations


The Okanagan wineries have always been Canada’s favourite, but it has not been until now that Okanagan wine has received international praise and awards. This article written by trusted author Tracey R for the BC Homes and Resorts magazine examines what is coming up in the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival 2008. There will be so many vineyards and varietals to sample, BCWI offers some simple tips to make your Fall Okanagan Wine Festival experience much less stressful for everyone. Designated Driver: DO NOT taste and drive at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival. Each winery will offer you several samples over the course of a tour, and it is easy to consume far to omuch wine to be able to drive. Plan ahead at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival and choose a designated driver before you begin your tour. Strategize: Don’t feel you have to try every Okanagan wine made by every winery. Giver your tour some focus and decide to taste reds only – or whites only. Or be even more specific and taste Merlots only. That way you’re comparing apples to apples and can explore how an Okanagan wine changes from vineyard to vineyard, winemaker to winemaker. Spit: It’s okay to spit at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival. In fact, you’ll be better able to tatse more wines that way. Wineries will provide a bucket (usually located on the tasting counter) for just that purpose. It’s the one place outside of the baseball diamond where it’s perfectly acceptable. Dump: It’s not necessary or polite to finish your entire sample of Okanagan wine. When you’ve tasted enough Okanagan wine samples, it’s perfectly ok to pour it out into the spit bucket. It’s not a sign you didn’t enjoy what you were poured. It’s a sign you’re ready to move on to the next wine sample. Cleanse: Eat crackers or plain white bread between tastings at the Fall Okanagan Wine Festival. They’ll clear your palate and allow you to taste your next Okanagan wine with more clarity. Too many samples without a cracker and your palate will be overwhelmed. Eat: Take advantage of one or more restaurants to break up your Fall Okanagan Wine Festival tour and more importantly, to enjoy a spectacular meal. If you’re more of a do-it-yourself type, bring along a picnic lunch. Some Okanagan wineries have picnic areas = buy a bottle of wine and enjoy the view, or find a spot along the way to throw down a blanket and enjoy a meal with a view fo the vineyards. Buy: Many of the Okanagan wines you’ll taste at a winery wont’ be available everywhere else, so if you like one, but it right then and there. Most Okanagan wineries will happily loan you an empty case to put in trunk of your car to store your wine purchases. Soon they will be allbuilt.” “Lakeshore is very popular,” said Paul Fabri, analyst for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation in Kelowna (CMHC). “That market has evolved tremendously over the past number of years in terms of product type, range of amenities and certainly price as well. That reflects an up-tick in demand for that type of property.” Naturally, the appeal for waterfront living is stretching out along the full 100 kilometre length of Okanagan Lake.
