The History of Atlanta, Georgia
Atlanta was first founded by the Cherokee and Creek Indians and by 1823, the white settlements started springing up in what was once known as Standing Peachtree. This town along with Thrasherville were incorporated as the city of Atlanta in 1847 with a population of 9,550. Although Atlanta was destroyed by Union forces during the American Civil War, it was chosen as the state capital of Georgia in 1868.
